Who among us is not aware of the organ music of Ken Griffin? His deceptively simple and direct organ arrangements of popular American songs dominated the pops organ field from 1940 to 1956, during which time, he was the most popular instrumentalist in America. His recording of “You Can’t Be True, Dear”sold over 3.5 million copies. Many of us who love the theatre organ now owe our interest in the organ and its music to hearing his recordings, and although he only recorded on electronic instruments, his playing gave us the interest to pursue the pops organ field in more depth and ultimately to rediscover the theatre pipe organ. Now, forty-seven years after his untimely death, we are planning a day of celebration of his life and his music. A visit to Mr. Griffin’s grave in Oswego, Illinois is planned for the morning and a gala concert featuring several organists playing in the Griffin style as well as some of their own music on Allen Organs and Hammond organs is planned. Refreshments will be served at the gala. The cost of the tickets is $15.00 in advance. $20.00 at the door.
